I don’t watch TV often. Mostly because I am busy for most of the day, so by the time I get home I am too exhausted to do anything but read for leisure or homework when school is in session. After hearing rave reviews about the new series, Scandal, starring Kerry Washington I decided to follow the series on Netflix on my down time at work. Scandal is a phenomenal series, but very hard for me to follow. I enjoyed the plot but I went through the entire series up to the newest season within one week. I will eventually go back and re-watch it before the new season starts just to pick up some things I may have missed. Anyway, after watching Scandal I decided to continue with my Netflix adventures. I heard about a new series called, “Orange is the New Black.” Although I always prefer books over series’ I decided to tune into the first season before reading the actual book. I am now into the sixth episode of season one, and I must admit I am having an amazing time watching it.
I just discovered that it is based on a true story which makes it even more fascinating. The series is based on a true story about a woman who goes to prison for a crime that occurred 10 years ago. The series reflects on key issues about prison life while bringing in lots of humor and light hearted real life moments. It addresses issues about prison relationships, mental health, gender and sexuality issues, religion, and gives an overview of the prison system in general. A lot of the women in the series are very relatable and most viewers can take something away from it.
Season 1: Ep. 6 “This isn’t about giving them power. This is about your mother telling you, you could take a bath before dinner or after. You were still gonna get wet, but you thought you had a choice.”
I hope you will enjoy it as much as I am. Here is the trailer:
