I am very aware of the fact that I’m young…it would be foolish of me to think that I have it all figured out by now. I respect those who challenge me on a daily basis despite my confidence. I respect those that force me to think and most importantly be mindful. Mindfulness in things that evolve and things that stay the same. What am I, or better yet, who would I be without them or it?
This was a letter I wrote to myself approximately two years ago. I often write these letters in hopes to never forget where I come from or the places I have gone. I don’t mean the physical places, but the emotional and mental spaces that my heart and mind have occupied. The people around you are a network, and as much as you may not believe it they all have some purpose in your life. They shape your personality, build your character, and help you learn life.
Here are a few questions you may want to ask yourself today:
Are the people around me benefiting me emotionally?
Am I the smartest person in my group of friends?
Do I have any toxic relationships with anyone in my circle of friends or family?
What is my conflict resolution strategy with my friends, coworkers, or friends?
Are any of my relationships one-sided?
What was the last thing I did to help a family member, coworker, or friend?
What was the last best/productive conversation I had with someone? Who was that person? What made it a great conversation?
Who would you be without any of your friends?
Who would you be without any of your family?
Who would you be if you had a different profession?
There are no right or wrong answers to these questions. The idea is to think about the people you encounter every day, and the ways you impact their lives and the ways they impact yours. The idea is to figure out who you are with your friends and familial relationships and who you are when you are sitting alone in your living room.
