Travel With Me: Los Angeles, CA

I go out of the country from time to time for travel, but lately, my adventures have all been in the U.S. One place I had yet to travel to was California. I’m not sure why it took me so long to venture out to the land of palm trees and sun, but I jumped at the opportunity when it came around.

Since I knew I was only going to be there for a short period of time, I had my heart set on going to The Marathon Clothing Store, and Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. I like to share my travel experiences on the blog so that readers can have an idea of what to expect if they decide to travel to any of these places. Like Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, I like to visit the “staples” of the state, obviously because I’m a travel hype beast, but I also want to know what the buzz is about.

The Marathon Clothing Store

The Marathon Clothing Store is a smart clothing store owned by Nipsey Hussle where customers can purchase merchandise and use an app to preview exclusive content. The store is located in a small shopping center at the intersection of Crenshaw and Slauson. With all the media build-up regarding the grand opening of the store, I envisioned the Mondo Burger of urban apparel. This was obviously my first time in California. The iPhones/iPad’s weren’t out so it didn’t really seem like anything outside of a normal urban apparel store. I was expecting to see more. It wasn’t set up, and I didn’t ask.

Upon entering the store three employees greeted us with smiles and welcoming gestures. At first, we were the only people in the store at the time, so we took a few pictures on a built-in bench in the store, and I took photos of the clothing. The check out process was easy, the staff were young and friendly and even helped us take pictures.

Truthfully, if you are traveling to California and you are interested in visiting the store you should probably put it at the bottom of your list. It really isn’t much to write home about unless you are a true fan of Nipsey Hussle, and want to be able to say you’ve been. You can always purchase The Marathon Clothing online.

Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles

Although I was only in California for two days, I couldn’t leave without trying Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. They said the wait would be “1.5 hours”. I never trust when hosts tell me a wait time because 95% of the time you don’t wait that long. We decided to stay. We ended up being seated after waiting for about 45 minutes. The establishment was casual and had dark lighting. I immediately noticed the prices were super expensive. $7 for a side of macaroni and cheese?! A side?! I quickly realized I wasn’t in the south anymore.

I was disappointed that the food was very average. It’s definitely something you could make at home. My friend warned me about it being over-rated, and she was absolutely right. It didn’t help that there is this place called, Dame’s Chicken and Waffles in Durham that literally has the best chicken and waffles I’ve ever tasted in my life. I had the Obama Special from Roscoe’s which I assure you is probably the best thing on the menu.

I had a blast drinking beer and walking around the city. California has many beautiful parts that I know I didn’t have time to see. I really wanted to go to the beach, run a few trails, and do some shopping. I was very excited that I got to go to the two places I mentioned, despite them not being what I envisioned. I still loved the experience of trying something new. The next time I am able to go I’ll definitely do some more exploring.

Till next time,

Laura
